Post Periodontal Treatment Instructions

You have just completed a session of scaling and root planing. This process was done to remove deposits of plaque and calculus, which were found below your gum line. Besides good oral hygiene home care, this is the most important step in the treatment and prevention of periodontal infections.

ORAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTION

Dr. Simons and staff will provide a personal, detailed instruction list which will include:

  • Peridex Rinse
  • Other rinse:
  • Brush Type/Technique
  • Floss Type
  • Other Aids

Some tenderness or soreness is normal after scaling and root planing. It is important to floss once a day, brush thoroughly at least twice a day, and to rinse with Listerine for one minute each day after having this procedure done. Good oral hygiene will help the healing process.

Rinsing with warm salt water or plain water two to three times a day for the next one or two days may help the gum tissue to feel better. Advil or ibuprofen may also be taken to help alleviate inflammation and discomfort.
